The Germany international is set to play in Champions League final

The Germany international is set to make the next step in his recovery process as he targets a comeback before the Champions League final

Borussia Dortmund have announced that Mario Gotze is one step closer to making his comeback after a brief spell on the sidelines as he aims to be fully match-fit for the Champions League final against Bayern Munich on May 25.

The attacking midfielder sustained a hamstring injury in Dortmund's 2-0 Champions League loss against Real Madrid two weeks ago and BVB initially feared that he could be out of action for the remainder of the season.

Nevertheless, Dortmund have now revealed that the Germany international will resume running exercises on Monday.

"Gotze, who's currently putting in extra sessions on the treadmill in his rehab programme, is planning to start jogging again at the start of next week," a statement on the BVB website reads.

The news of Gotze's imminent return to individual training has been met with approval by head coach Jurgen Klopp, who's keen to have the 20-year-old at his availability for the Champions League final.

"That would be just great, because then we would have him back in full training for a week and he would be available for us in the final."

Gotze has been a key player for Dortmund this season, netting 16 goals in 44 appearances, but is set to depart in the summer to join rivals Bayern for €37 million.
